Esgair Fibres

I started Esgair Fibres with my love for textiles and materials and colour and feel.  I have knitted since I was in school and made a lot of my own clothes through the years. Now with my own smallholding and my own Ryeland sheep I was able to take it a step further and learn to spin my own. I try to spin only natural fibres, wool, alpaca, silk, cotton but occasionally some synthetic fibres are used to accentuate the naturals depending on what is being made.

Why Alpaca?

Alpaca is a luxury fibre with a soft lustrous handle to it as well as being stronger and more resilient than some of the finest sheep’s wool.  Originating from Peru it is said that the sun god Inti referred to is as the ‘fibres of the Gods’

With friends with Alpaca I was able to sample the fibre and completely fell in love with it and so may range of items in Alpaca was born.

With 12 colours in the range from white to black there are many combinations already available without the need for dyeing but add all the other colours and the combinations are extensive. The thickness of the fibre varies from 19 – 32 micron and so Baby fleece or first cut is always incredibly fine .

Alpaca does not have the itchiness of wool and so for those who are allergic this makes a wonderful item to wear

All my fleeces are purchased from local breeders in Wales .
